Pohon Tengkawang yang termasuk dalam golongan kayu kelas tiga (umumnya digolongkan sebagai Meranti Merah) mempunyai ciri-ciri khas dengan pohon yang tinggi besar, mempunyai banyak cabang dan berdaun rimbun. Tumbuhan ini hanya berbuah sekali dalam periode antara 3-7 tahun yang terjadi sekitar bulan Juni-Agustus. Buah Tengkawang menghasilkan minyak lemak yang berharga tinggi. Minyak Tengkawang dihasilkan dari biji Tengkawang yang telah dijemur hingga kering kemudian ditumbuk dan diperas hingga keluar minyaknya.
